At sundown
We shall meet at the village square
Under the huge baobab tree
Where once Nnaa sat to tell her Simla
Where Ziema and Dakura once played love games

After the evening Tumpani
Eaten with local sauce
Made with Shea Butter
And spiced with dawadawa

At sundown
We shall meet at the village square
Under the huge baobab tree
Where the elders of the land sat to pick their teeth
While discussing important community issues

After consuming gourds of pito
Fresh from Naama’s pito corner
Made with well-dried sorghum
And bubbling with white foam

At sundown
We shall meet at the village square
Under the huge baobab tree
Where the children hid their pilolo sticks
While their friends tried to find them

After sundown
We shall retire to our compounds
To our dry grass-stuffed mattresses
And our straw-woven floor mats
And drift off to dreamland
While awaiting a new day
The rise of the bright morning sun
